St Mark Passion by Oliver Tarney, written in 2019, will be performed against the atmospheric backdrop of Pugin’s St Cuthbert’s Chapel. Tarney’s dramatic and profound setting of the Passion draws in many of the parables and miracles from Mark’s gospel to frame the narrative. He and the librettist Lucia Quinault also strive to offer a voice to those who are traditionally voiceless in this story. Of the premiere performance, the Church Times commented, ‘All those involved were at an amazing evening: a world première of a work that I hope will travel the world. What an effect it had on all of us on Good Friday on the north Cornish coast.’
